Merriam-Webster.com defines reputation primarily as an overall quality or character as seen or judged by people in general.

The second definition of reputation is recognition by other people of some characteristic or ability.

Third, a place in public esteem or regard: good name.

There’s even a bit of history on the link above sharing that this term received high favor in the 14th century. Its Latin verb root, reputare, means “to take into consideration” or “to think over.”

Our study today discusses the reputation of the Church in Sardis at the time John wrote Revelation.

Have you heard of the sandwich technique?

I’m not talking about how to build something we eat.

Rather, I’m referring to a constructive feedback tool often used during hard conversations.

This tool encourages combining positive reinforcement with constructive feedback.

Christ does exactly this in his review of the Church in Thyatira, our passage of study for today.

How Do We Benefit from God?

Merriam-Webster.com defines a benefit as something that produces good or helpful results, effects, or promotes well-being.

What benefit comes to your mind first, given that definition?

Perhaps your mind leaps first to the financial or medical benefits one receives from an employer.

Or are you thinking about healthy lifestyle activities that benefit you physically, mentally, and emotionally?

Maybe a strong network of friends and family struck you first.

What else would you list as a benefit based on the definition above?

Are You an Obedient Exile?

This question is not about physical exile per se.

Rather, it is a question of whether you are obedient to your faith when the stakes become higher than you expected.

Are you aware there are more martyrs for Christian faith today than at any other time in history?

If this startles you, it is probable that you live somewhere where Christianity or being a follower of Jesus is not under outright persecution.

It may also startle you if you are not someone who keeps informed about the state of God’s mission to redeem people from every group across the globe.

Today, we will study the opening two verses of 1 Peter from the New Testament.

I hope these two verses will encourage you to consider deeply what it truly means to be an obedient exile no matter where you live.
